Essay on Vince Carter NBA Basketball Player or Community...

Lamar Carter known to all as, Vince Carter, was born on January 26.1977 in Daytona Beach, FL. Carter became an extraordinary leader at a young age. Carter used his talent to gain fame and fortune so that he could give back to his community and the less fortunate. During his years at Campbell Middle School he was the only seventh grader to ever play on the Varsity Basketball team, not only was he on the team but he was a starter on the team. While at Mainland High school he was captain of the Volleyball Team, member of the Marching Band and is known to be the most gifted basketball player to grace their court. Vince was also awarded McDonald’s All-America and was voted Florida’s 1995 Basketball Player-of-the-Year. After graduating with†¦show more content†¦During this season, Carter led all other rookies in scoring and blocking and held an averaging 18.3 points per game and continued on to win the NBA Sportsmanship Award. Among all of the basketball accolades Vince received this year, he was also named a Goodwill Ambassador by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Once entering the NBA and signing his multimillion-dollar contract he decided that instead of spending money on cars, mansions or jewelry, he would establish the Embassy of Hope, a non-profit foundation, which was set up to help the needs of children and their families. This was just the beginning to many ways Carter would start to give back to his community. The foundation is based out of his hometown of Daytona Beach. He says â€Å"It was important for me to share my good fortune with those who are not so fortunate.† (Vince Carter pg. 24) Since the foundation started, the Embassy of Hope has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and has touched the lives of children by contributing funds to many non-profit organizations. Every year the foundation provides 2 scholarships a year to a male and a female student in Volusia County who have met certain criteria. It currently continues to raise money and develop new and different scholarships for high school graduates.
